If you are reading this, you have decided to get help with improving your mental health. A visit to see a mental health provider is like making an office visit to see your medical doctor for a physical ailment. The only difference is that you will be discussing your concerns about your emotional, mental, and spiritual health. A psychiatric visit is often longer than typical medical visits as the provider will take time to listen, process, and get to know you. Psychiatric visits provide a confidential environment in which everything discussed between you and your provider remains between you and your provider unless you are at risk of self-harm or harm to others. We want to know why you came and what you need. We want you share your expectations for treatment. The provider will ask questions about your mental health, Medications, previous treatment, general health, social history, and family history.
This information is crucial in helping the provider to make an accurate diagnosis and identify other issues that may not be related to mental health. If it is determined that you need another specialty for care and treatment, you will be referred for further evaluation. Because Insomnia, anxiety, lack of concentration, and depression can all be caused by medical problems such as thyroid issues, sleep apnea, infections, medication side effects, hormone abnormalities, brain changes, and many other treatable medical conditions. A proper diagnosis is necessary to develop an effective treatment plan.
How We Formulate a Treatment Plan
Your provider may use medical or non-medical treatment options based on your situation. Every patient is unique and comes with a history of treatment failures, treatment successes, and treatment options that have not been tried.
Psychotherapy vs Medication
Medications for the treatment of depression or anxiety may provide immediate relief but can take up to six to eight weeks to reach optimal effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to simultaneously employ the other treatments options. Psychotherapy, Group therapy, and lifestyle changes may be initiated before starting medication treatment or with medication treatment.
